If this gorgeous little climber was hardy we’d sell it by the ton. Its small and exquisite purple flowers enchant everyone who sees it flowering in one of our greenhouses. It can be grown outdoors in gardens in very mild areas that get little to no lasting frost.

This Australian scrambling climber will tolerate mild frosts in a very sheltered, sunny garden. It's covered with masses of white blooms in winter and is a beautiful companion to its purple cousin. It's probably even more unusual, though. 2l pot

A friend who is an expert on many exotic plants tells us that this is the hardiest and most reliable Hedychium for light shade or full sun in England, Wales or lowland Scotland. Haven't tried that ourselves but it's said to be flourishing in Edinburgh Botanical Garden. Flowers late June - September followed by lovely seed capsules. Previously known as H. Great Dixter, or Tara, this has been correctly re-named. Grows to about 4' with wonderfully scented, pale yellow flowers. Hardy in sheltered gardens but don't allow it to become water-logged over winter. Many Hedychiums tend to flower very late, if at all, in English gardens. 2l pot

Fairly hardy so worth trying outdoors in sheltered, warm gardens but it will flower later than if it's under glass. Makes clumps with new spikes emerging through the summer. The dark green leaves are maroon underneath. Striking, fragrant, orange/red flowers on a plant that grows to about 6'. It produces little plantlets which can be removed and planted on.

Tall slender canes, and narrow glaucous leaves. Goes to about 6 ft and has shell pink flowers from August onwards in a cool greenhouse. It requires full sun to light shade and a sheltered spot in the garden. We suggest that if you give it a winter mulch Samsheri will be hardy to around -4 ºC. Kept in a conservatory or greenhouse this plant will be evergreen. Keep well watered, and feed regularly when container grown, cutting away previous years flowering stems. 2l pot

NB This plant seems to have several spelling variations but after much consultation with an expert we are satisfied the Plant Finder spelling of Shamshiri was given to the RHS in error and also that this is not H. Kinkaku with which it is sometimes confused but of which it is a hybrid.

One of the hardiest going to around -4C but not in water logged soil in UK. Wet kills plants more often than cold does, if the cold is not prolonged. If you have a wet garden, take it in for the winter. This is a fairly compact plant reaching over 2’ with broad foliage to about 3”cm wide, and with delicate white flowers in summer with long orange-red stamen. Flowers earlier than many. 2l pot

A very rare plant in this country. It is said to be the hardiest of the Heliconias but nonetheless is to be treated as a conservatory plant in UK. It could, of course, be put outside in a pot in summer where its resplendent and showy flowers of red and yellow would make a tremendous focal point. Here, in a greenhouse, it flowers at 8' tall and is still in flower in October. These plants will be 'decanted' from a 10l pot and the roots wrapped in plastic for shipping.

aka the Congo Cockatoo or Parrot Plant, this is an easy to grow plant which will go down to 10C/50F outdoors. Pinch out the shoots to encourage bushiness and keep in bright sunshine. Minimum watering in winter but keep in a good light. 2l pot

Large white orchid-like flowers on this cousin of the Bizzy Lizzie. The scent is superb and in our garden it over-winters in a sheltered spot but is cut back by cold every year. Grows 4 to 5 ft., more in the greenhouse, where the remarkable perfume is best experienced.

A very unusual, hard to find Leonotis. Grows very quickly to 8' tall and likes full sun. Orange flowers occur in globes (1" to 1.5") slightly prickly to touch with thin leaves immediately underneath. Flowers are orange and tubular with four stamens with white filaments.  Stem is very rigid and square, leaves rounded and toothed. 3l pots

A sage like plant with spicy scented foliage and open pitcher like flowers. It has narrow, deep green leaves and extremely attractive blue and white flowers in summer. It's borderline hardy, growing to about 4' and needs sun and good drainage. Ours has been confirmed as Lepechinia chamaedryoides by the RHS and not one of the others of this family sometimes mistakenly labelled.

Nobody else is listed in the Plant Finder as having this charming little shrub. It has red funnel shaped flowers and soft green leaves. It grows to 2' tall and is said to be hardy but hates winter wet so treat it as tender and keep its feet dry. It's a woody member of the Phlox family. Bushy, sturdy growth. It's another good plant for the lower storey in conservatory planting. 2l pot

This is the Giant Burmese honeysuckle, an unusual species that is tender except in the mildest spots and never fails to cause amazement! Enormous creamy flowers deepen to yellow as they age. Fragrant. The flowers are in proportion to their large, handsome dark green leaves and the plant grows to 18' to 20' tall. It's caused a lot of interest in the garden because it has bloomed spectacularly well in a pot. Under glass in a conservatory it would have done even better. We put ours outside each summer, then cut it back and bring it in for the winter. 2l pot in early summer.
