Hardy down to -5C this is a wonderful shrub which grows to about 10' tall. It likes full sun and fairly moist soil. The flowers give it its nickname of the daisy bush. Olearia macrodonta is evergreen with prickled, ovate leaves and a large amount of panicles of its musky-scented, white daisy-like flowers in summer. The leaves are grey-green with white reverses. 2l pot

Highly scented, delicately beautiful tubular white flowers in spring cover this hardy shrub which grows to 6' - 8' eventually. Not immensely fast growing. 2l pot

An upright, compact, evergreen from Australia with rosemary like silvery leaves and corymbs of pale pink flowers. Frost hardy. Likes sun, shelter and good drainage but is tolerant of most soils. 2l pot

Very dwarf shrubs, useful because they can spread spread densely under other taller shrubs. They require some shade and acid soils, so are good for underplanting e.g. rhododendrons. P. terminalis is perhaps the best known, fully hardy and evergreen in shaded acid soils. It will tolerate full sun if the ground is consistently moist. 2l pot

This is a marvellous tree, grows fast and bears fragrant blue, foxglove like flowers in spring. Our original plant was given to us from a past Head Gardener at Agatha Christie's house, Greenway. You can either grow it for the flowers or stool it which will give enormous leaves almost 2’ across but few or no flowers. As to hardiness, we’re told that it’s grown as an ornamental in the streets of Moscow but whether it flowers there is another matter! If you know, please tell us. 2l pot spring only.

This shrub grows to around 12’ and is particularly known for its red juvenile foliage. This needs some protection from late spring frosts so some shelter is a good idea. Plant in a sunny or partly shaded place in moist but well-drained soil. Ours is so brightly coloured that from a distance you’d think a rhododendron was in flower! 2l pot

A tender evergreen shrub with dark green foliage and orange-red tubular flowers in summer. Plant in fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun. In warmer areas it may be evergreen but in frosty areas, protect with a dry mulch in winter. Frost tender but if cut down by frost will probably behave as a hardy perennial and come again from the root. H. between 4' to 6'. 2l pot

This lovely shrub requires full sun and a slightly protected position as it isn't 100% Hardy. Plant it in either border or container where it will catch the eye with its creamy flowers and mid-green leaves.

Deep purple leaves which become slightly more green as they age. This shrub is deciduous and has clusters of small white, pink tinted summer flowers. It likes acidic soil but will tolerate alkaline soils. It needs to be in moist, well drained soil in partial shade or full sun and is Hardy. 2l pot

Even those of us who aren’t mad about conifers, really like this graceful, spreading tree with its drooping foliage. It’s an arresting sight and stands out from most others. It should be planted where it can stand alone and be admired. Limited stock. 4l pot (needs a package to itself)

Pittosporums are excellent for our milder coastal regions. 'Garnettii' is deservedly an extremely popular cultivar. It forms a large spreading bush with attractive creamy-white markings on the edges of its leaves. During late spring and early summer small, bell-shaped, purple flowers are produced in clusters and are fragrant. Lovely foliage for flower arranging.2l pot

This evergreen shrub is hardy and has evergreen leaves with a crinkled edge. The flowers are very small and dark purple. It makes a lovely specimen tree or a good hedge and can be kept clipped to the desired shape and size, growing to about 12'. It's very useful to flower arrangers.

Green leaves with a white edge, evergreen and fragrant at night. The leaves of this Pittosporum do not have the wavy edges of some others. It's ultimate height is about 12' . Plant in full sun or partial shade. Very cheerful note of colour in a winter garden. 2l pot

Pittosporums are well-loved foliage shrubs, but are only hardy in mild areas and seaside gardens where they make attractive hedges, but elsewhere needing the shelter of a warm wall. P. tenuifolium is among the hardiest, with neat, evergreen foliage on black twigs. The flowers are small but noticeably honey-scented and are an attractive chocolate-purple. 'Tom Thumb' has golden green young leaves, later turning a beautiful bronze-purple. It has the RHS Award of Garden Merit. 2l pot.

You may have seen this used for low hedging in the Med. Sadly, it's then clipped so closely that the sweetly scented white flowers are lost. This is evergreen and produced its flowers in June - July and it's good for coastal locations but is borderline hardy. We've seen it growing happily in London. 2l pot

This species Rhododendron has matt dark green leaves and scented creamy flowers with a crimson blotch. The leaves have a rusty red reverse. Over 10 years it grows to a H. of 30' and is a magnificent plant. 5 litre pot so needs a package to itself. Please contact us about sending.

This large evergreen shrub has deliciously scented blush pink flowers which open to pure white. These are about 6" across and have two pale bands of green in the throat. This shrub grows to 13' H&S and likes a humus rich, acid soil in partial shade and some shelter. It's hardy in the more sheltered parts of Britain. 3l pot.

A highly scented shrub which flowers much later than most others, usually in late summer. It needs watering in dry spells to enable it to flower well. Prefers a shady spot and will grow to 20'. Hardy down to -6C

This remarkable Rhododendron has the largest leaves in the Rhododendron family. They're up to 3' long and are dark green and glossy with a furry, pale fawn underside. Large flower trusses have 12 to 30 tubular creamy white to pale yellow flowers with a basal crimson blotch. H. 30'. Plant in a sheltered position in moist, good soil. Flowers early to late spring. 5 litre pot

This is a trailing rosemary but its growth habit is attractive and interesting. It grows upwards a little and then arches over and starts to trail downwards. H&S about 3'. It looks lovely in containers or on the edge of a wall. It must have full sun and sharp drainage. It has come through the 09/10 winter with us and even flowered in January. Dark green foliage and light blue flowers.

This well known and much loved rosemary is ideal for giving some height in the herb garden, or for planting as an informal hedge. It has narrow, aromatic dark green leaves and small, light blue flowers. Rosemarys like to be planted in poor, well drained soil in a sunny and sheltered place. Can be tender in prolonged frost, so in colder areas, grow them in a well drained container and bring them in for the winter. 2l pot.

This is the name by which this rosemary is known around here. Nobody seems able to determine its true origins. It's hardy only in frost-free areas. We've left the Jeep in the photo to show the scale of the enormously long trails of this plant. It's a really beautiful addition to a frost-free garden. It even has to be trimmed back from crossing the drive! Tender except in seaside locations in warm areas, hence its name.

This rosemary forms a mound, has very fine green leaves which are particularly scented, sometimes taking on a purplish tone in winter. The flowers are a deep, vibrant blue, fading gently as they age. According to Olivier, this will go to -10C and grows to a height and spread of just around 3’. This is a brand new form and as far as we know nobody else has it in UK.
