This deciduous Abutilon has clear mauve flowers in late April to May and bears them in great profusion. It grows to a height of about 10' with a spread of around 4' with us. It's happy in most soils and prefers to be in full sun. Frost Hardy but went to -7 on the SW corner of our house last winter.

A mimosa that can go to around 20', spreading about 10'. It likes sun or partial shade and has fragrant yellow flowers in spring. The semi-weeping habit becomes more obvious as the tree matures. It's evergreen, frost tolerant for brief periods and said to do well in British gardens. 2l pot

Sometimes called lemon verbena, the leaves of this plant are intensely lemon-scented. It's a good one to plant where you can brush your hands over it! The leaves can be used to make a tisane or place one in the bottom of a cake tin to flavour a sponge. Goes to -5 in our garden if not cut back until danger of frost is over. Can be used in linen cupboards, placed between sheets to give a beautiful scent. Sprays of small white flowers in late summer but the strongly scented leaves are the real attraction. Nobody can pass it without stroking it.

This unusual shrub is a most welcome late flowering addition to the garden with its lovely purple buds and yellow pea like flowers. This distinctive evergreen tree was beloved of Victorians, with bright green, shiny leaves that mature to dark green. Its leaves are sharp, hence the name - it would puzzle a monkey to climb it! It's hardy and will grow to 80' or more so is not one for the small garden. These also make a magnificent avenue. Water well in first year of growth. 3l pot

This has mid-green rounded leaves that are slightly 'toothed' at the edges. The flowers are highly scented fluffy and yellow. It's a lovely thing to have in flower in your garden in late spring/early summer. It will take a fair amount of shade and is hard down to -7 C here. 2l pot

Grown for its beautifully coloured foliage this gets to around 15' to 25' tall. This lovely small, multi-stemmed tree has heart shaped leaves which often turn yellow in autumn. These will be supplied as bare-rooted plants in spring only. One of the dogwood family, the flaming red stems are a gorgeous note of colour in a winter garden and look best when planted in a group. In spring/early summer they produce green leaves and small white flowers. Cur the stems hard back each March to ensure the production of the brilliantly flowered stems and apply a thick mulch of well-rotted manure or leaf mould.
