Long, rust-red flowers from July, bringing colour when other things are fading. Large attractive, velvety, veined leaves. Quite unusual and very graceful, elegant plant to around 5’ tall, 6’ in the conservatory. Needs a sunny place in the garden and copious watering in dry spells. Do not keep wet in winter. Long flowering period into first frosts. Half-hardy with us.

This is the darkest of the blue flowers with very dark green, heavily corrugated leaves. Grows to 2'6". Tender and flowers in the winter conservatory.

Grows to just over 3' and has slender stems covered in bright scarlet flowers. A hardy perennial down to -8C

A shorter, bushier version of the S. rutilans pineapple sage.

Still looks good in a sheltered spot, having gone down to -3 or more. Grows to 2'6" and has small, pale pink flowers and is very floriferous. Leaves are small and green.

This Salvia is hardy with us, dies down in winter and returns each spring. As we've sold it for many years under its old name of S. ambigens, we know what you mean whichever you ask for! Unfortunately, when the experts re-name some of these plants people who bought it from us many years ago under its old name become confused.

This Salvia is a gorgeous blue with almost black calyces. They're half hardy and drought tolerant and look lovely grown in clumps. Plant them in moist but well-drained soil. H.around 3'. Plant in partial shade or full sun.

So far this has proved hardy in our garden. It grows to over 4' tall and its brilliantly pink tubular flowers bloom into late summer. In warm summers we've found that it's very attractive to Hummingbird Hawk Moths.

This Salvia is a cross between S. involucrata and an unknown variety. It's darker and smaller in flower and height than S. involucrata

Grows to about 3' with pale yellow flowers and will take a little frost. Not to be considered hardy, though.

Showy spike of soft purple flowers on silver stem, tubular shape, 3/4in long, leaves heavily ribbed and silvery underneath. This goes to 3' and is still flowering into the very late summer/early autumn with us. Needs winter protection.

H&S 4'. A rare species from Ecuador, bearing whorls of deep red flowers in winter conservatories. Tender.

This is a hardy shrubby perennial with bright pink flowers, obviously. As it was given to us, we're not sure which it is and are waiting to identify it this summer - we hope!

Unusual red and white flowers, though in warmer weather, the flowers may be all one colour or the other. H. about 30".

Small evergreen leaves, perennial, bright red flowers. Half hardy but like all sages, doesn't like wet feet!

Salvia Nemorosa has violet flowers and is many branched .The flowers are produced in the summer in floriferous terminal racemes. Prefers moderately fertile humus rich, moist but well drained soil, either in full sun to dappled shade. Fully hardy.

This tall Salvia has an upright and somewhat open habit. The dark green leaves are broad, pointed and heavily textured. The deep purple tubular flowers that appear in late summer- autumn have a velvet-texture and are formed on whorls.

Very brilliant scarlet flowers on stems 2' - 3' tall. Tender.

This is the pineapple sage which experts seem to agree is now S. elegans. However we find that our S. rutilans is different in growth habit, S. elegans being shorter and bushier. Flowers are red about 1.5" in spikes. Maybe it's the Devon air!

This salvia is a tall plant which looks good at the back of a sunny border, flowering in late summer and autumn. The flowers, which are a turquoise blue, are carried in short spikes on tall stems. This flowers over several months, producing a succession of flowers. Half hardy.

This had no official name for years and is therefore circulating under a number of synonyms. It has very vibrant maroon-red flowers on a shrubby plant. Best in part shade in hot areas. Frost tender. Suitable for hot, humid areas. Height: 1m Flowering here in an only just frost-free greenhouse. Grows to 6' under glass. For years this was known to us as Salvia 'Ken' because Ken gave it to us and didn't know its name. We're as sure as we can be that it's S. van Houttii.
